THS Band Attends Nutcracker Ballet at Samford University

Members of the Talladega High School Band recently visited the campus of Samford University to attend a matinee performance of George Balanchine's production of "The Nutcracker". This was a perfect way to end a long and successful fall season, by spending some quality time together and getting some much needed relaxation time before semester exams began.

Windows to the World

For a year and a half, this blog has brought to you happenings from around our school system. During this last week, the blog was accessed 338 times. Of those, 100 hits occurred on Monday, the day we featured this blog as part of the agenda for our Board of Education.

As one might expect, many of the hits over the last week have been from Talladega addresses. Our reach is not limited to our city limits, however. Our records also included 9 hits from the same address in Virginia, 19 hits from the same address in Montgomery, and hits from Birmingham, Tampa, and New York. This blog was even accessed once by a viewer in India.

For many people around the country, and yes, even some from around the world, the only impression they have of us and our school is the one which they acquire from reading about us through our blog. Some find us by accident. Others know of and use this blog as a model for what is possible. Whatever their reasons for visiting, this blog truly is our window to the world.

College DAY and NIGHT at THS

College-bound students at Talladega High School have been given a wealth of information beginning with College Day held back in October and most recently during College Night December 6th. Parents were mailed a special invitation and coupon good for a door prize. Students were promised PIZZA and door prize opportunities, too.

The events, although filled with fun, served an important purpose...to guide the futures of seniors and inform parents about topics such as financial aid, scholarship opportunities, and the advantage of two year colleges.

The counselors should be applauded for the time spent preparing for both College Day and College Night. These types of events take hours of preparation with such tasks as contacting speakers, gathering door prizes, securing refreshments, and talking with recruiters. One has to stop and remember these 3 ladies have over 700 students to serve. Their attitudes are refreshing and Talladega High is lucky to have them. They make a difference everyday.

Thank you Ms. Shephard, Mrs. Callahan, and Ms. Peters!

Career Decisions Made Easier!

Students in Talladega City Schools have an advantage when making career choices for their future due to the courses offered through the Career Tech Center at Talladega High School.

For example, students with a desire to work in the health care industry can take Health Academic Foundations, which provides an opportunity to become competent healthcare workers. After mastering the foundation’s course, students may enroll in Health Diagnostics, a course designed to introduce students to therapeutic innovations and dynamics of diagnostic nucleus.

The last course dealing with healthcare is Health Science A Continuum or an internship.
All of these courses are taught by Amy Stephens, the coordinator of this popular program and employee of Talladega City and Baptist BMC .

During this third course, students with good discipline records and the prerequisite courses begin their internship at Citizens BMC. The hospital provides name badges and TB tests. These interns, under Mrs. Stephen’s leadership, visit 3 times a week, 2 hours per day until the end of April. The final product of this course is a student-produced powerpoint and presentation of their experience in the program.

This opportunity allows students to be in the “real world” and feel what it is like to actually work in the medical field. What a wonderful advantage they have!

Salter's Harvest King and Queen

Salter's Harvest King and Queen were recently crowned during an assembly. The King and Queen received their gifts as parents and guests looked on. The fourth grade presented Christmas music for all to enjoy and the students listened attentively and clapped for their favorite on the King and Queen's court. The King and Queen represented the school in the Christmas parade riding a float shared with Harvest King and Queen from Hal Henderson. Congratulations to all the students and thanks to all that were involved in the event.

Talladega City School Athletes Shine at the Special Olympics

October 5th was a special day for athletes from the Talladega City School System who competed in the Local Special Olympics held at the Alabama School for the Deaf. Each student had the opportunity to compete in events such as 100 meter dash, 50 meter dash, 100 meter assisted walk, 100 meter wheelchair race, and softball throw to name a few.

Every student from the Talladega City Schools placed in at least one event and most of them placed in two. This event is a pre-requisite for the athletes to be able to compete at the State Special Olympics Alabama that will be held in May at Troy State University.

The school system commends the teachers and staff who work with these students everyday. Your support and care plays a huge part in their continued success.

Congratulations to all of the athletes on a fantastic job in representing the Talladega City School system!
